The October issue of VIP is now available. The contents can be seen at:

http://www.vivavip.com/vip/

This issue provides an in-depth analysis of Dialog NewsRoom and is an extension of last month's comparative review of Factiva and LexisNexis. Data from last month's issue has been published in this issue in order to compare the three major services in terms of:

• Number of sources - analysis by subjects, type of publication, language, geography (including a table comparing numbers of sources for hard-to-find countries); length of archive; number of full-text items, number of abstracts, number of translated items; timeliness – ie, how long before an item becomes available online. The duplication policies of both companies are also considered

• Company information coverage

• Search options and syntax; indexing – Dialog SmartTerms, Factiva Intelligent Indexing and LN SmartIndexing Technology; Sort options; Output formats; and Saving/Printing options

• Current awareness options; Personalisation features; Administrative tools; and User support.

The same search is carried out on all three services and the results are analysed in terms of overlap, type of publication and more.

The review also includes a look at Dialog Live News which was only launched in early October. Live News is a personalised news monitoring service that offers automated streaming of real-time news reports from 2,300 sources worldwide.

October's VIP also includes a Guest Comment item from David Crystal, one of the UK's foremost experts on linguistics. His article, 'Take care of the sense, and the search engines will take care of themselves', provides an account of the thinking and theory that went into Crystal Reference's development of Textonomy, which offers a radical and new approach to searching.

Next month, VIP will be reviewing Corpfin's Company Query and Bureau van Dijk's new MINT product. What other products would you like to see included in VIP? You can post your ideas for other reviews here at the VIP Lounge or email me, in confidence, at pam.foster@vivavip.com.
